Virginia View - Digital Atlas of Virginia

The Digital Atlas of Virginia was developed in response to continued teacher demands for accessible map based teaching resources, and is a direct result of meetings with the Virginia Department of Education, and with individual educators. Maps included in the initial release of the Digital Atlas were identified by a focus group of educators as being critical resources to support classroom instruction. As a result, many of the maps and resources contained in the digital at last directly support Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOL's)!

How can you Access the Digital Atlas of Virginia?

Resources associated with the Digital Atlas of Virginia are currently available in three formats. Choose the option that best fits your needs!

  • Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) - This is probably the most efficient method for making copies for classroom distribution. Adobe PDF reader must be installed in order to view a PDF document. You can install a free version of Adobe Reader from: http://get.adobe.com/reader
  • Web Mapping Service - this is basically an interactive web mapping application (similar to 'Mapquest"). This option does not require any software, just a regular 'ole internet browser (such as Internet Explorer, Safari, or Mozilla Firefox).
  • ArcGIS 9.3.1 or 10 Data Service - this option is geared towards the "power" users out there who are using GIS software (ArcGIS 9.3.1 or 10). The data service option enables users to "pull" data directly from our server into their own ArcGIS project. Users can then customize the map by adding additional layers, etc. To use this add the GIS Server http://arc.gis.vt.edu/arcgis/services select the "VAView" folder and select all of the layers within.
  • ArcGIS Explorer Data Service - this option is geared towards the "power" users out there who are using GIS software (ArcGIS Explorer). The data service option enables users to "pull" data directly from our server into their own ArcGIS Explorer desktop or online project. Users can then customize the map by adding additional layers, etc.
